Granite rock hand sample A granitoid is a generic term for a diverse collection of coarse-grained igneous rocks that consist predominately of quartz, plagioclase, and alkali feldspar. Granitoids range from plagioclase-rich tonalites to alkali-rich syenites and from quartz-poor monzonites to quartz-rich quartzolites.

A true granite can be rather dark, but if you ignore the dark minerals and assess only the felsic component, it can still be properly classified. In the classification proposed here, three main groups of granitoids correspond respectively to a crustal, a mantle, or a mixed (crustal and mantle) origin of the magmas. Each of these main groups is subdivided into two or three types. A-type granite is a particular category of the S-I-A-M or 'alphabet' system which classifies granitoids and granitic rock by their photoliths or source.

If other granitoids are included, then granites sensu lato are plutonic rocks with 20 < Q < 60 (Le Maitre 2002). This definition of granites has a main advantage but,  medium-grained garnet-muscovite granite,. Issett Lake pluton. Petrogenetic types of granitoids.

Many granites, however, may post-date the thickening event by tens of millions of years. Compiling published data in order to establish a global “descriptive” classification of late-Archean granitoids (i.e. based on petrography and/or geochemistry) is a difficult task, severely hindered by (i) the internal variability of each group, owing to local conditions and to the potentially heterogeneous composition of available sources Our classification scheme recognizes three other families of feldspathic rocks. The magnesian rocks are granitoids that have evolved under oxidizing conditions and that show only minor iron enrichment.

• Classifications are a short-hand that can be used to convey a general description of geologic observations. • One can define a group of granitoids, in terms of geologic setting and chemistry, that are distinct from other granitoids. Other classifications of rock series are briefly noticed, and it is observed that they are dependent on a chemical and mineralogical classification.
